As people become aware of the importance of clean air inside, more people choose to purchase products to purify the air at home. When you are away from home, you can still reap the benefits of clean air with a personal air purifier. These devices are small enough to be carried anywhere: on planes, to the office or when travelling. A few personal air purifier models can be worn around your neck.

Personal air purifiers are about the size of a beeper and are battery operated. Most come with a plug for your car and an ac adapter, making them easy to plug in anywhere. These air purification devices work electrostatically, charging the particles in the air and trapping them inside the device.

Who shouldn’t use personal air purifiers?

Personal purifiers work best in small areas. They remove bacteria, dust, smoke, chemical smells, mold and viruses from the air. They work well on smoke in public places where smoking is allowed. Many people find these devices allow them to frequent places they previously couldn’t due to excessive smoke. If you have severe allergies and need clean air, you can have it anywhere with these machines.

Portable air cleaning devices don’t use hepa or pleated filters. Instead, they have reusable filters like other home ionizing air cleaners. Small collection plates inside the device attract the particles removed from the air. The collection plates can be easily taken out, wiped clean and replaced in the machine. For larger devices, this must be done weekly. Small personal air cleaners should be cleaned more frequently, at least two or three times each week to maintain optimal air cleansing.

These devices, like larger ionizers, create ozone as a by product of the ionization process. Some sources believe this is dangerous. People with asthma sometimes have a negative reaction to the ozone released by these products. This effect may be worse with a portable unit because the breeze blows right into your face. This gives you a larger dose of ozone than what would be dispersed into the air of a larger room. For this reason, asthma sufferers may find their symptoms grow worse with a personal air purifier.
