Having an ionic purifier is a matter of pride for many people. This is because an ionic purifier is an air ionizer that is supposed to use charged filtration system to attract impurities and particles out of the air. Some use a pleated filter, but others use something more like metal that can be wiped clean again for further use. They do not offer humidification in many cases. Most companies that sell an ionic purifier tout the vitalizing effects such a product with have on the entire house. But, do ionic air purifiers live up to such hype? The question can hardly be answered, for it largely depends on one’s point of view.
The battle between a product magazine and Ionic Breeze air purifiers
The Sharper Image has long touted its Ionic Breeze air purifiers as cutting edge, and without peer. They are also supposed to be a remarkable value for the money. However, popular and prestigious consumer product magazine came out with a report that said they weren’t really much more effective than a more traditional air purifier with a filter. However, many people do enjoy their Ionic Breeze, and have found that they like the quiet operation and the cleaner air it produces. For those people it is worth the money. However, Sharper Image is unhappy with the report and has sued over the report. But, the battle aside, how do ionic purifiers work?
The answer lies in charged particles. The point of ionic air cleaners is to attract particles that have a different charge. These particles, as they build up on the collectors, look like dirt and dust. Of course, after enough build up, the purifier will not work as well any more. However, many of these machines are easy to clean. A damp cloth is usually all that is required to wipe the dirt and dust and prepare the collector to trap more irritating particles. This also works similarly in fabric pleated filters. However these filters are often disposable, and you must purchase new to replace the old.
There is no doubt that air cleaners can add a vitalizing touch inside buildings. It helps circulate the air and remove particles. One to accomplish this: an ionic purifier.
